SCOPE Alliance Releases White Paper on Mapping Java Platform Enterprise Edition and SAF: A NEP Perspective

Leading NEPs make recommendations to bridge the gap between Java Platform Enterprise Edition -based applications and SAF-defined carrier grade middleware interfaces

Piscataway, NJ, 29 November 2007 - The SCOPE Alliance, an association of leading Network Equipment Providers (NEPs), today published a new white paper “Mapping Java Platform Enterprise Edition (Java EE) and SAForum: A NEP Perspective” in support of SCOPE’s mission of enabling and promoting the availability and interoperability of open Carrier Grade Base Platforms (CGBP) based on Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) building blocks.

An emerging requirement of NEPs is the ability to develop and integrate Java EE technology-based applications into the CGBP. Presently there are no well defined software architecture nor software interfaces/services that allow Java EE technology-based applications to be integrated and managed within the same high availability environment of the CGBP. This paper provides an analysis of Java EE technology relative to the carrier grade middleware interfaces as defined by SAForum and presents recommendations on ways to bridge the gap between them, without the need for any changes to existing Java EE applications.

"Currently and in the foreseeable future many multimedia applications in the telecom networks are being implemented using Java EE technology so it becomes increasingly important to be able to mix native high availability functionality with Java EE technology-based applications using common interfaces" said Magnus Karlson, chairman of SCOPE Alliance. "This paper describes an environment where high availability Java EE and native application can co-exist and be supervised in the same fashion in a clustered environment."

"As the industry standard for developing portable, scalable and secure server side Java software applications, Java EE is a logical choice for building next generation service delivery platforms. Sun participates in and supports the open specification efforts of the SCOPE Alliance and its members to drive adoption of Java EE technology by Network Equipment Providers and the telecommunications industry. This white paper and other efforts by the SCOPE Alliance are further steps in enabling the use of Java EE in carrier grade applications", said Peter Ewens, Vice President, OEM at Sun Microsystems.

About SCOPE Alliance
The SCOPE Alliance is an association of Network Equipment Providers aimed at accelerating the deployment of Carrier Grade Base Platforms for service provider applications. Its mission is to enable and promote the availability of open Carrier Grade Base Platforms based on Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) hardware & software building blocks, and to promote interoperability to better serve Service Providers and consumers.
